Chapter 9

Damian arrived at work to find Natalie and her detectives at work with his staff researching the sheriff’s behavior over the last twenty years. He took a look at the flowchart he had detailed on his dry-erase board and was happy to see checkmarks by some of the boxes indicating they had the data for a particular piece of evidence. That was progress. As he was the king of the dark web, he joined them, half investigating and half teaching the detectives where to look.

His temporary phone rang and made him jump as he wasn’t used to the new ringtone. At least it had caller ID and he knew it was Ariana calling. That was unusual at this time of day. He hoped nothing had come up with Hermione.

“Hey, what’s up?” Damian asked.

“I think your Sheriff Wendy Knight is at work interfering with my life.”

Damian stiffened and asked, “What’s wrong? What did she do?”

The other people in the conference room turned to look at Damian given the sharpness of his tone. It was unusual for him.

“She had her people place hazardous material signs on my biomedical start-up company and it’s been closed down. My company’s people can’t get inside to take care of their work. They do a lot of work with mediums that have to be documented at timed intervals as to the growth of cancer cells or infectious cells. So it’s not just the inconvenience of having the business closed, but it will wreck some of the work that the company’s doing. Even if she closes us down for just a day, it will destroy some of our work.”

“Do you have a lawyer? I would file a civil harassment temporary restraining order against the sheriff to reopen the business,” Damian suggested.

“Actually, that’s why I’m calling. I have an attorney, but you mentioned one of the judges is in the sheriff’s pocket, so I obviously don’t want to ask that judge for the TRO. What’s the name of the crooked judge so we can stay away from him or her?”

“Just a moment. I should have looked that up before now. I’ll call you back in five to ten minutes,” Damian said. He would have to hack into the court’s IT system and it likely wasn’t a good idea to do that in front of two detectives. He returned to his office and began the hacking effort. He had various ways to hack into computer systems. The fastest, but least preferred, method involved sending emails to someone in that computer system and waiting for them to respond so he could use them as a conduit to reach the system. He didn’t like this method as someone like himself could trace the hack back to him. However, he planned to erase all evidence of his intrusion when he was done. Nine minutes later he had an answer for Ariana.

He texted her, Stay away from Judge Claudia Cox. Need any other help?

She texted back, Not yet, thanks

He returned to the conference room and resumed collecting information on the sheriff.
